The more I read and hear about this, the more I smell a set up from the family of Malone's deceased wife. IMHO, all they want is this kids trust fund money when he is able to get at it when he turns 18.
It is really very simple, the kid was disrepectful to a teacher in school and Sam punished him for it. End of story.
I think Malone was correct in doing what he did.
As a parent, you need to do what is necessary to make sure that your kids grow up the right way to be a positive in society. If that means taking a belt to them, so be it. I tell Emily all the time that I am not here to be her friend, I am her parent and I am here to tell her how it is and to make sure that when she is old enough to live on her own that she is able to walk into the world as a self sufficent, independent, confident young woman who can do whatever she sets her mind too.
And before you ask, yes I have physically disciplined both of my kids before. And yes, I have hit them with something other than my hand. Did I enjoy it? No I did not. Whenever I have to 'touch' one of the girls, I make it a point to go back and talk to them about it and point out the behavior I am trying to correct. It seems to be a punishment that they respond to. To date, the girls have not repeated the behavior that got them disciplined in the first place.
14 years ago Sam choked his mother and threw her on the floor after she told him not to use the telephone. She complained of a sore throat, jaw, elbow and leg and wrote in court documents that she wanted him to move out.
The charge was later dismissed after Malone completed the YMCA's Amend program for abusive men.

In an era where people spend WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY TOO MUCH TIME trying to dig up anything they can find on any known person (or any person at all) especially politicians and celebs, I'd have thought that something like that would come up during the election. A politician's criminal record is fair game. Particularly one who has gone on the offense about "family values."
I reserve judgment with regards to his son, but this newest revelation certainly makes things interesting.
DUCK QUICK! The point of my posyt went right over your head. The point I was trying to make was that I was surprised that it didnt come up.
I just believe that much of the general populace spends way too much time looking for things people that really have no bearing on anything. Spending too much time in other people's business is one of the biggest problems in society as a whole.
But, no I do not think that something like choking his own mother should have been overlooked.

Something in this article reminded me of this thread. Dunno what.
I find hope for the future in the son's (and his friends') reaction to this as a non-issue.
Beating a kid (or anyone) into submission is not appropriate. Disciplining a kid is. It is hard to say if SM was disciplining his son or beating him. Only the 2 of them really know.
Things to consider...
Has this happened before?
Are the punishments getting more severe?
Is the son's bad behavior escalating despite milder forms of punishment (like grounding)?
Why did he call 911 for a few bruises?
Why did he specifically mention that his father was on council?
What are the real dynamics about custody of this child?
Is there a history of child abuse? (yes, the mother incident may indicate violent behavior, but that was 14 yrs ago and directed towards a parent and not a child) 14 yrs ago, SM was a child himself
Was SM abused as a child?
There is so much we DON'T know about this situation....so I find it odd that anyone who doesn't know the family can make a judgement call!
I personally think parents don't discipline their children ENOUGH these days. Of course I would never condone child abuse, but I also don't condone parents who are too worried about being their child's "friend" that they are afraid to discipline them.
You can be a child's "friend" once the child is an adult as indicated by responsible and respectful behavior. Some children reach that around 16, others it takes into their 30's. I don't think it occurs very often when the child is under 16. This boy is 14 and his father should punish him if he has done something wrong. Unfortunately, it is the father's choice to decide which infractions are unacceptable and forms of punishment.
